Origin: Flanders
Period: Circa 1650
Material: Wool tapestry
Condition: Antique condition with substantial age-related wear, fading, losses and repairs as shown.
Flanders, circa 1650.
A large 17th-century Flemish handwoven tapestry depicting a biblical scene believed to represent King Solomon enthroned.
The composition centers on the seated figure of Solomon, surrounded by attendants and set within a wooded landscape. Woven in wool, with a beautifully faded palette of indigo, tobacco, parchment and muted gold. Its colors would originally have been achieved using natural dyes derived from plant and other organic sources, their tones softening and shifting over centuries into the palette seen today.
The tapestry retains the wear expected of a textile more than three centuries old, including fading, losses and areas of fragmentation. We have left these visible—they are very much part of the piece.
Professionally backed and fitted with a conservation-friendly Velcro hanging system for installation.
Because every good room needs a past.
