Gien French Majolica Artichoke Plates, Set of Five

$225.00

France, circa 1950s.

A set of five French assiettes à artichaut, or artichoke plates, by Gien, circa 1950s.

Made in glazed faïence in the most wonderful olive green, each plate is deeply molded with scrolling leaves and a central flower. These were designed specifically for the ritual of eating an artichoke: the leaves could be placed around the plate as they were eaten, with the small recessed well for the sauce.

Five French plates made specifically for eating artichokes—which feels like exactly the sort of thing the French would make a special plate for.

Beautiful stacked on an open shelf, hung together on a wall, or, preferably, put back to work with artichokes and plenty of butter.
