Bavaria (Southern Germany), dated 1793.
A late 18th-century Bavarian marriage cabinet, hand painted throughout with florals and scrolling decoration on a warm yellow ground. The doors open to a unexpected deep red interior with green-trimmed shelving and hanging space. Original iron hardware and key remain. Literally, so cool.
Known as Bauernschrank, cabinets like this were made throughout Bavaria and the Alpine regions, often to mark a marriage and furnish the couple’s new household. The year was traditionally painted prominently on the cabinet, making the 1793 date across the upper frieze and important part of its story rather than simply decoration.
After more than two centuries, the ol’ girl is looking pretty good, beautifully worn, with the variations, losses and patina that come with age. A remarkable piece of Bavarian folk furniture that is every bit as useful as is special.
Because every good room needs a past.
